Optometric Vision Therapy is the branch of optometry that is specifically devoted to optimizing an individual’s visual performance.
Its procedures are designed to:

  • Prevent vision and eye problems from developing
  • Improve those visual skills necessary for success at school, work or sports
  • Remediate poor visual skills that are preventing efficient use of the eyes

As a Developmental Optometrist, Dr. Harpur designs individualized, supervised programs for utilizing lenses, prisms, light, and specific vision therapy techniques to enhance a patient's visual skills, helping the brain to more efficiently process visual information.

Who can be helped by Vision Therapy?

Anyone, child or adult who experiences vision related difficulties like the following:

Learning-related vision problems
Difficulty sustaining clear, comfortable vision results from poorly developed or inefficient visual skills. Lack of efficient visual skills interferes with a person's ability to acquire or process visual information and results in Learning-Related Vision Problems. Vision Therapy develops the necessary visual skills for effective reading, writing, and learning. These visual skills include:

  • Eye tracking skills
  • Eye teaming skills
  • Accommodation (eye focusing skills)
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Visual Processing Skills (Visual memory, form perception, closure,)
  • A normal, unconstricted peripheral visual world

As these skills are enhanced through vision therapy, they are reinforced and become second nature through repetition and integration with other motor, sensory and cognitive systems. Experiments have shown that enhancing visual skills with vision therapy makes reading more efficient, learning easier, and may increase a patient's ability to visualize, conceptualize and create.

Convergence Insufficiency
The best treatment for convergence insufficiency is in-office Vision Therapy as shown by a recent scientific study conducted at the Mayo Clinic and funded by the National Eye Institute.

Poor Binocular Vision
Good binocularity is the ability to coordinate the two eyes as an effective team.  Vision Therapy trains an individual to use both eyes equally, accurately, smoothly and efficiently together.  This is a necessity for reading, computer use, sports, driving, etc.

Near Point Stress-Related Visual Discomfort and Related Problems:
Our fast paced, 21st Century modern world places intense demands on our visual systems. Prior to the 20th Century most people were illiterate and used their eyes far less frequently for near vision tasks. That has changed dramatically. The human visual system, ideal for hunting, fishing, and farming is now called upon for constant near work for reading and computers, whether at school, office or home. Children in particular, but many adults as well, experience a wide variety of visual and general body symptoms related to the environmental impact of excessive close work. These may include blurred vision, skipping letters and words, double vision, eyestrain or fatigue, avoiding near work, or even headaches, nausea and vertigo.
